The Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP) of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), successor, since 2010, of IUPERJ, is a leading research and graduate studies institute in Latin America. IESP-UERJ was the first higher education institution in Brazil to offer a doctoral degree in Political Science, graduating its first PhD student in 1971. As of 2018, students have defended 281 doctoral dissertations and 361 Master’s theses in political science and 212 doctoral dissertations and 271 Master’s theses in sociology.
IESP-UERJ has trained many generations of social scientists, who have gone on to hold faculty positions in prestigious universities in Brazil and abroad, as well as positions as researchers, political consultants and administrators in important public and private institutions. In the 1970s, the institute played a key role in the foundation of the National Association of Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences (ANPOCS), Brazil’s largest and oldest academic association in the fields of Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology. The institute was also a chief supporter of the creation of the Brazilian Political Science Association (ABCP) in the 1980s.
IESP-UERJ is the institutional home of Dados – Revista de Ciências Sociais, the oldest and most prestigious social science journal in Brazil. Published continuously since 1996, Dados is indexed at the Institute for Scientific Information – ISI (Thomson Co), with high impact in the social sciences in Brazil and wide projection in Latin America. The faculty of the Sociology and Political Science programs at IESP-UERJ consists of permanent professors which acquired their professional training at top Brazilian, American and European universities, in addition to many associate, collaborators and visiting researchers. The high quality of the institute’s graduate programs is intimately connected to the multiple research activities developed at the institute either by individual scholars or through the institute’s 18 research groups and laboratories.
Besides the annual selective processes for enrollment in the masters and PhD Political Science and Scoiology courses, IESP-UERJ provides various formation opportunities. The Politics and Society Specialization course offers a more condensed formation, at the intersection of the disciplinary boundary of Sociology, Political Science and Economics, for professional and fresh graduates with the scope of work in private and public companies, foundations, government and civil society organizations. Furthermore, many extension courses are offered every year.
