Graduate in Sociology and Political Science from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1967), she holds a PhD in Sociology from the Université de Toulouse I (1974) and a HDR – Habilitation à diriger des Recherches – from the Université de Lyon 2 (2001). She is Emeritus Coordinator of URBANDATA and Professor at the University of Lille. She has experience in the area of Sociology, in particular in Urban Sociology, and works mainly in the following fields: favela, urban poverty, history of urban research in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro and housing policy in Brazil.
Eli Diniz is a retired Full Professor from the IE/UFRJ. She was the Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Public Policies, Strategies and Development (IE/UFRJ/Institute Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz/Ministry of Health (from March 2007 to September 2008) and Researcher level 1-A of the CNPq, until March 2008. She holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the IUPERJ (1971), and a PhD in Political Science from the São Paulo University (USP; 1978). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toulouse Le-Mirail, in the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques, in France, in 1983, as well as at the Center for Latin American Studies, University of Florida, United States, in 1984. She has been Visiting Professor at the Center of Brazilian Studies (Ceb), at the University of Salamanca, in 2003, and at the Instituto Universitario Ortega y Gasset for the PhD Program in Contemporary Latin America, from 2005 to 2008. She currently is Visiting Professor in the Master’s program “Contemporary Latin America and its relations with the European Union: a strategic cooperation” (coordinated by Prof. Dr. Pedro Pérez Herrera), at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, teaching the course “Brazil & Southern Cone”. She has been Coordinator of the Instituto de Ciência e Tecnologia em Políticas Públicas, Estratégias e Desenvolvimento (INCT/PPED) from 2009 to 2011, and Coordinator, along with Renato Boschi, of the research project “A Construção da Nova Agenda: Elites Estratégicas e Desenvolvimento” since November 27, 2008.
